Definition of Strength Training

What is the definition of strength training?

Strength training is any exercise that requires some type of weight or resistance to contract a muscle. Weight training and resistance training are both methods of strength training.

These terms can be used interchangeably and all basically mean the same thing. Some may argue that weight training and resistance training are different types of training. But most weight training exercises are also resistance training exercises.

Resistance training is opposing a force which could be a weight from dumbells, elastic bands, machines or your own body weight. Weight training is the lifting movement of any type of weight like dumbbells, machines or even your own body weight.

Almost all exercises involve both to complete a full repetition. And both movements are important to building healthy lean muscle mass. A bench press for example requires you to lift the weight upwards and resist the weight, against gravity, from falling on the down movement. And if you hold it for a few seconds at the top of the movement then it's isometric as well.

All forms of strength training if done properly with good form are equal in the benefits they provide. Strength training is the best way to increase muscle mass which leads to muscular endurance, increased bone density, fat loss and so much more.

Incorporate it in your fitness regimen 2 to 3 times a week for best results. You'll feel better, stronger, younger and much healthier.
